Lower Back Pain?

Lower Back Pain.

Recognizing low back pain and understanding how to help relieve and manage it through chiropractic care.

Your low back is designed to provide support, strength, and flexibility to your upper body. Day-to-day life can make your low back more vulnerable to pain and injury. About 31 million Americans experience discomfort or pain in their low back. So what causes back pain, how can I prevent it, and what forms of treatment are best once it’s developed?

There’s a various number of potential injuries, misalignments, and conditions that can cause pain in your low back. Sudden severe trauma, and or repetitive stress can cause irritation or damage in your ligaments, tendons, discs, muscles and bones. Symptoms of low back pain can be caused by conditions like arthritis, urinary tract infections, obesity, and kidney stones.

What are disc bulges or herniations?

Disc bulges or herniation are one of the most common causes of back pain. A herniated disc, also called a slipped disk, puts pressure on nerves nearby or on the spinal cord when the outer edges of the disk deteriorate and bulge out over time. About 35% of Americans have a herniated or bulging disc, according to a recent study.

Many people who are diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc don’t report any pain, while others may experience intense and severe pain. The position and type of the herniation impacts the type of pain that is experienced. For example, weakness and a shooting pain may develop in the legs if a surrounding nerve is being irritated by a damaged disc. Although herniation can be tough to reverse, chiropractic care has been demonstrated to provide relief and in some instances reduce the severity of the disk bulge and associated pain, and prevent further development of the herniation.

Subluxations are another common contributor of back pain, but are often overlooked. A subluxation is a partial or incomplete dislocation of a joint, it can impede your movement and cause pain. Subluxations may occur in any point of the spine and can be caused by stress, toxins, and physical trauma. The length of time to correct a subluxation may vary, this depends on the individual, and severity of the subluxation, along with other factors.

Tendon or Ligament Sprains And Muscular Strains?

Anyone may experience a sprain or strain,  but they typically occur for those who engage in tasks their body may not be accustomed to, or through pushing themselves too hard. A ligament sprain affects the ligaments around a joint after an injury, and are usually caused by stretching and tearing the ligament. On the other hand, muscular strains are typically caused by improper form when lifting. Strains and sprains may be uncomfortable and bruising or swelling of the surrounding area may occur. However, sprains and strains are infrequently serious and usually respond well to chiropractic care.

Stress And Back Pain?

The physiological profile of those who deal with chronic stress is very different from the average person. Elevated stress levels have been revealed to contribute to the development of back pain, as well as other conditions like heart disease and digestive issues. “Trigger points” can be created through tension produced by chronic stress that causes a contraction of muscle tissue, which can be very painful. Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments that are designed to correct and restore the natural positioning of the spine; these adjustments have shown to help with pressure and alleviate tension in the nervous system.

HOW DO CHIROPRACTORS TREAT LOW BACK PAIN?

Treating lower back conditions requires a comprehensive approach that combines chiropractic care, physical therapy, stretching, and exercise. We start by thoroughly assessing your injury, conducting orthopedic, neurological, and spinal examinations, and utilizing diagnostic imaging like X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to pinpoint the exact location and severity of your lower back pain.

Based on this assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan focused on reducing pain, inflammation, and stabilizing your lower back to prevent further damage. We also provide exercises for you to perform at home to support your recovery and prevent future issues.

During each visit, we integrate chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, and massage therapy to enhance the effectiveness of treatment. Physical therapy includes tailored exercises performed under the guidance of our physiotherapist, while massage therapy targets damaged tissue for relaxation and healing.
